Swing is the love of his life!

Andrej Hermlin was born in Berlin in 1965. His father was the well-known author Stephan Hermlin, and his mother was from Russia originally. Andrej Hermlin grew up bilingual. During childhood and as a teenager he traveled to many countries with his parents and met famous poets like Pablo Neruda, Friedrich Dürrenmatt or Heinrich Böll. When he was four years old Andrej Hermlin heard music on one of his father’s records. This music caught his attention and was not to lose its hold on him – American swing from the ‘30s, the music of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. He had his first piano lessons at the age of seven. Andrej Hermlin taught himself to play the “stride” style of the thirties, which he still plays. From 1986 until 1990 he attended the Hanns Eisler College of Music and graduated in 1990. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, Andrej Hermlin focused on his activities as bandleader, pianist and manager of the SWING DANCE ORCHESTRA, which he had founded back in 1986. And this with increasing success. Again and again Andrej Hermlin demonstrated his versatility. He composed music and wrote lyrics for his orchestra, composed film music and jingles for radio stations, organized tours of his band to the USA, to Hong Kong and London. Two of Andrej Hermlin’s great passions are his historic automobiles and flying. His second wife Joyce is originally from Kenya. Andrej Hermlin has three children.
